Long before anyone tried to purchase a copy of the Constitution, I was part of a push to organize a decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) with a lofty goal — to be the first group to buy a major professional sports team with cryptocurrency.

It was 2018, and my company was looking at ways to use cryptocurrencies to enable people to pool resources for aspirational projects. At the same time, a National Hockey League team came onto the market. We thought how incredible it would be to have a team where the fans are the owners, where they actually have a say in how the team is run, and profit from its success.
